What is Drain Relining and How Does it Work?
No-Dig Repair Technology
Hearing that you have a cracked or collapsed drain used to mean one thing: heavy machinery, deep trenches, and a ruined driveway or garden. Today, thanks to modern trenchless technology, we can fix severe structural pipe damage without lifting a single paving stone. This process is known as drain relining.
What is Drain Relining?
Drain relining, often referred to as CIPP (Cured-In-Place Pipe) lining, is a method of repairing a damaged drainage pipe from the inside. Essentially, we create a brand new, highly durable pipe within the existing damaged pipe. It is the most cost-effective and least disruptive way to repair cracks, displaced joints, and root-damaged drains.
The Drain Relining Process: Step-by-Step
At CleverWorks, our relining process is meticulous to ensure a permanent fix:
- 1. CCTV Drainage Survey: We never guess. We start by feeding a high-definition crawler camera into the drain to pinpoint the exact location, size, and nature of the damage.
- 2. High-Pressure Cleaning: Before a liner can be installed, the host pipe must be completely clean. We use high-pressure water jetting and robotic cutters to remove scale, fat, and tree roots, returning the pipe to its original diameter.
- 3. Preparation of the Liner: A flexible felt or fibreglass tube (the liner) is measured and cut to size. It is then impregnated (wetted out) with a specially formulated epoxy resin.
- 4. Insertion and Inflation: The resin-soaked liner is inserted into the damaged pipe, usually via an existing manhole. Once in position, an internal bladder is inflated, pressing the liner tightly against the walls of the damaged host pipe.
- 5. Curing: The resin is left to cure (harden). Depending on the system used, this can be done ambiently or accelerated using hot water or UV light. Once cured, the bladder is deflated and removed.
- 6. Final CCTV Inspection: We run the camera down the line one last time to ensure the new pipe is perfectly smooth, structurally sound, and fully operational.
The Benefits of No-Dig Relining
The advantages of choosing relining over traditional excavation are significant:
- Minimal Disruption: No need to dig up your lawn, driveway, or patio.
- Cost-Effective: You save thousands on the cost of reinstatement (rebuilding the driveway or landscaping the garden).
- Speed: Most relining jobs can be completed in a single day, whereas excavations can take a week or more.
- Durability: The new CIPP liner is incredibly tough, jointless (meaning roots cannot enter), and typically guaranteed for decades.
When is Relining Not Suitable?
While relining is a miracle cure for most drainage issues, it cannot fix everything. If a pipe has completely collapsed and flattened, or if there is a severe loss of gradient (the pipe dips heavily, causing water to pool), traditional excavation will be required to physically replace the pipework. This is why a preliminary CCTV survey is so critical.
